Tui Na understands the body, pain and pathology through theories of anatomy, physiology and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Treatment is directed on many levels including the muscles, ligaments, joints and bones and utilizes the acupuncture points and meridians. Today, knowledge from western biomedicine, such as orthopedics, sports medicine, and physical medicine, have integrated into the Tui Na practice. Frozen shoulder, for example, is best treated with an integrative approach utilizing the best of Eastern and Western medicine. The shoulder may be “frozen” because of mechanical problems in the joint capsule, inflammation, tendonitis, scars, adhesions, and other possibilities. Treatment with Tui Na strives to mobilize the joint, restore range of motion and break up adhesions in the joint capsule. Acupuncture can be used during Tui Na therapy to reduce pain and help the body heal faster. Of course medication and traditional physical therapy can also be added to the rehabilitation program.

The ability to see a single problem in multiple ways is just one of Tui Na’s strengths. Tui Na is a very diverse form of manual medicine and incorporates kneading, rolling, acupressure and deep massage, rocking, shaking and the stretching of joints as techniques which all work together to eliminate pain and restore function. Chinese medicine believes that the body has the innate power to heal itself and then tries to facilitate this process by bring the body into balance. With such a focus, Tui Na’s effects are felt sooner and last longer than other types of manual medicine. After receiving Tui Na therapy you can expect to see a decrease in pain, an increase in range of motion, and better function of the affected area.

Natural pain relief from the roots of Chinese medicine

Have you suffered an injury? Do you have chronic pain or tension? Do you suffer the occasional sprain, strain or sports injury? If you do then you should try Tui Na. Tui Na is a therapeutic massage which is fantastic at relieving pain. As therapy, Tui Na dates back to the New Stone Age, around 2700 B.C. It is the oldest branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine and was developed before Acupuncture and Chinese herbology. 5000 years ago in China, life was a struggle against nature. In this struggle people learned how survive and treat their pains and illnesses with what they had. Long before people reached for an herb or stuck needles into their flesh, they used their hands to heal. Through thousands of years of practice and development Tui Na became refined and ordered. What remains today are only the most effective and time tested techniques. Despite its rich history and continuous use in China, Tui Na remains relatively unknown in the United States today.

Today in China, Tui Na has its own specialty in hospitals. Students entering medical school specialize in Tui-Na and spend years learning techniques of muscle relaxation, stretching, spinal manipulation, and even bone setting. While it is primarily used for muscle and joint problems, in China it is used to treat an array of diseases such as diabetes, facial paralysis, insomnia, hypertension, and a variety of musculoskeletal disorders. It is a particularly good therapy for infants, children and those who wish to prevent illness. During the long history and development of Tui Na, its theories and techniques were brought back to the west. Parts of Tui Na, namely the spinal manipulation, were later developed into what we know today as Chiropractic medicine. Many types of manual therapy from massage, to physical therapy, to osteopathy all have roots back to Tui Na...

I believe that if acupuncture were better utilized for headache treatment there would be a dramatic and significant reduction in healthcare costs and increased productivity in the workforce. You would also see fewer overdoses and adverse reactions to medications, such as stomach bleeding from NSAIDs which sends hundreds of thousands of people to the hospital every year and kills thousands.

While acupuncture is an effective treatment for many diseases and illnesses, most people use acupuncture for pain relief. And...in case you didn't know, acupuncture is fantastically effective for hundreds other kinds of pain besides headaches. Basically if it hurts then acupuncture will diminish the pain and help the healing process. I know from treating hundreds of headache suffers that acupuncture can not only diminish the duration, intensity and frequency of chronic headaches but with regular acupuncture it can keep them away for good.
